When we got home we thought more about the making some additional money from a small cut on any cut tools sales that end up at the hardware stores made us think that it wouldn’t be such a bad idea, and we thought that before we made any deals we should contact Dan. Dan is our lawyer, and he should be able to give us the straight information on what we should do. I called Dan myself, and he thought we should come in to see him. We agreed, and made an appointment for next Wednesday. Dan had been our lawyer for years, and he always gave us good advice. This time was no different. He could see the disappointed look on our faces, and he said that you cannot mix the not for profit operation with business. He said that we can start another small business and then have that business be responsible for any sales and receipts of sales that comes from any learning seminars. We thanked and told him we would think over what he said. When we got outside, we decided that it was just too much trouble. It was for the better. We thought we better build our operations and stick to the mission of the organization.

We went out of the lawyers office feeling hopeful. At this point all we wanted to do was save our cut tools business. We thought we could. I had spent all day last week calling all the vendors and suppliers, and we were dealing with the legal aspect on a daily basis, and now we had to talk to the employees. This was not going to be easy, as we were going to have to let some people go. We had been the victim of embezzlement, and when the authorities came to investigate, they found that we were in violation of a government contract. This brought in even more authorities, who spent the better amount of their time questioning us about non compliance to the contract. It didn’t really matter to them that if there had been no theft they would not be in there pouring over contracts and looking at our behavior. We had taken a 5 month leave from work, Tara and I. It was supposed to be 6 months, but we got a panic call from our accountant. He told us point blank that we were broke, that the business was on the verge of failure, and that we would probably be in trouble legally.

Now my father is buying a lottery ticket every single day. He bought a new type of glucose monitor for his diabetes and filled out a little card that came with it and won 6 months’ worth of free diabetic supplies. Then my mother won a necklace at a jewelry store’s grand opening and now he thinks we’re on a roll. He heard from someone that the next lottery jackpot is going to be worth more than 150 million dollars. Even if you have half of that taken away by taxes (and I think that that’s how it generally works), that’s still enough money to not only pay off all your debts, but also live comfortably for the rest of your life without working. In the meantime, he’s playing for those smaller jackpots. Honestly, I see nothing wrong with playing the lottery, but you shouldn’t do it expecting to win. Odds are that you won’t. But my father’s already planning on how he’s going to be spending the money that he’s going to win. A bigger house, car, etc. If he were thinking about buying me a car, maybe I’d be more enthusiastic. In fact, I might even buy a lottery ticket just for this one jackpot.

My Uncle Frank used to preach to me a lot, but never about anything all that useful. For example, he sworn up and down on his mother’s grave that Ascensia Elite Test Kit was the best diabetes test kit that money could buy. I kept trying to tell him that I didn’t have diabetes and that the type he and my father had was Type 1 diabetes, which doesn’t pass on through the family like Type 2 does and anyway it skips a generation. Uncle Frank would shake his head at me like I didn’t know what I was talking about and say, “You’ll see. We all get it.” Then I asked if he meant all men get it or just people in our family. He said, “Both.” Which, of course, didn’t make a lot of sense to me, but there was never any point in debating Uncle Frank on anything. His logic never matched mine or anyone else’s for that matter. Before you even think it, no, he doesn’t do any drugs nor does he drink. He’s not senile either. He’s only 48. He just thinks about things differently than the rest of us do. He puts things together in ways no one else would think of and doesn’t like people telling him he’s wrong. But if you’re curious, he makes a living as a bartender. His tips are awesome because people gather around to listen to him.

I use to hear stories about how people easily got rid of there debt. A neighbor of my mom, Barbara, always was spending and buying things, running up her credit cards and such. She eventually explained how she was always able to get out of debt. Her secret was after racking up so much debt over a time period, she would just file to have her debt removed and start over. This woman would take advantage of the system and file for bankruptcy. I was never sure how she was able to do it, you know qualify, but she did. Well, she sure was not happy after Bush had the new bankruptcy laws passed. She tried to file again but it wasn’t as easy for her and she had to go through all these classes and come to find out her debt wasn’t just wiped out like she said use to happen, she still had to repay back everything. Man, she was upset! She started going on and on about how Bush was trying to stick it to the little people and didn’t care about people who were struggling to get by. The only thing I could think about this woman was wow.

I just got my insurance card in the mail the other day, which made me pretty excited. Not only can I go see the eye doctor now, but also it came with all kinds of coupons like those value packs that come in the mail. There were coupons for money off contacts, prescriptions, even for a free diabetes test kit which I have no idea what I would do with but I might just get it anyway because it might come in handy, you never know. What I am worried about is how it will affect my doctor visits and if I will need to pay a higher co-pay. My dad works for the city so his insurance is great, covers jus about everything. I doubt mine is as good so I am not sure if I will be able to get the same treatment. The tests and other things that were covered may not be covered anymore, so I will have to check. I am still under his insurance for now, so I can afford to see my doctor at least one more time, if not more, and ask her what I need to. Hopefully it will work out in my favor.

I’m taking a break for a little while from all the work I’ve been doing. I still haven’t decided on a personal injury attorney yet. After the accident, I was just going to let it go because I’m not the type of person who likes to cause problems for anyone but my dad thought that I should pursue this in court. He said he highly doubts the other people would give me the same consideration if the situation was reversed. After some careful consideration I finally decided he was right. I can’t always let people get away with things, especially those who refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. I could see if these people made an effort to acknowledge what they did, but they haven’t. I probably would’ve chosen to handle things differently if they had, but it was clear they had no intentions of doing that. I think I’ve learned a lot from this accident. I think it taught me how to stick up for myself. I like being a nice person, but I think I realized that has its limitations when you see injustices going on around you. Since the accident I’ve wanted to be more of an advocate for people who find themselves in a similar situation. My dad told me he’s really proud of me!

Houston as a city is a mess. There’s no zoning and the addresses don’t seem to make sense. We needed to find a personal injury attorney in Houston. We really didn’t want to come back to the city, but we had no choice. We located a few lawyers and told them our story. Mostly, we just got strange looks. It is a strange story. We were walking in downtown Houston when an elephant hit Tara. I know it sounds strange, but that’s exactly what happened. There was some type of city sponsored event that included a circus. One of the elephants got upset and broke out of its chains and took off down the street. We were driving along and I looked in my rearview mirror to see… an elephant bearing down on us. I was so shocked I couldn’t believe my eyes. I blinked several times and turned to Tara. She must have looked in the passenger side mirror about the same time, because all we could do was stare at each other. The car in front of us slammed on the breaks, and I did too. The elephant was getting closer and finally hit the car. It crushed Tara’s side of the car.

Last year, I got to go to New York City for the first time in my life. It was great. My girlfriend Eve and I visited the Statue of Liberty, caught a Broadway show, did a lot of shopping, and even visited ground zero. Before we left, Beth told me, “I want to get Lasik in New York before we go.” I stared at her for five minutes, wondering what she was talking about and then finally went to the internet café across the street from the hotel and looked it up. Lasik is laser eye surgery done so someone doesn’t have to wear glasses or contacts and, according to the web page, there are dozens and dozens of places to get Lasik in New York. I asked Eve why she wanted to get Lasik in New York so badly and she said because it was New York! It had the best doctors. Then I asked her why she wanted to get laser eye surgery done at all. She was only 26 years old and I’d known her for 5 years, though we’d only been dating for a year and a half. It was then that she pulled out her contacts. I was shocked. No one in our group of friends had known. She wore green contacts when her eyes were this dull brown. I nodded and told her to get the surgery anyway.
